Edward J. Brennan III ((Retired 2006 formerly Principal of Tomlinson and more recently Curriculum Program Leader for Social Studies passed away.)

Edward J. Brennan III — (passed on May 28, 2015) For me it is a CELEBRATION. This week I died from Leukemia. It was a celebration to live with the condition and be enmeshed in the love of my family. My wife Phyllis of 48 years, my daughter Gwen Kauffman and her husband Kyle, Marissa Gillispie and her husband Stephen, Jennifer Edwards and her husband Jonathan with my grandson Joshua and Granddaughter Abbey, and my son Tom Brennan and his wife Brigid and my granddaughter Annika.

Son of Edward and Marguerite Brennan who gifted me with the love of tolerance and compassion. I was also indeed fortunate to have three siblings, Peggy Brennan, Jerry Brennan and John Brennan who were with me and supportive all the way. There are others including Patricia Brennan, my spiritual advisor, who prepared me for my new life.

But it was also a celebration of passing, where I looked forward to the next life and as it is said the dropping of the body as the light continues. Please celebrate my new opportunity!

Based on the influence of the Jesuits at Fairfield University and my participation in the March On Washington, where I heard Dr. King’s Dream Speech, I decided to pursue a career in education and service. I went to Fordham for my Master’s and NYU for my Doctorate (all but Dissertation) in American History. I began my teaching career at our Notre Dame H.S. where I became Chair of the History Department.

I then joined the Fairfield Public Schools where for 33 years I held a variety of positions including teacher, K-12 social studies supervisor and principal. I then left to become principal of Saint Mary School in Ridgefield, CT. During many of those years I worked part time focusing on the economically disadvantaged in Bridgeport.

The following tribute to Joe Giorgio was submitted by former Superintendant of Fairfield Public Schools, Dr. Joseph Zapytowski:

Joe

Our sincere and profound condolences and prayers are offered to Joseph Giorgio's wife Rose and Family.  Jean and I are greatly saddened by the news of Joe's death.  When we made our first voyage from Grand Haven in Michigan to Burnt Store Marina in Florida, Joe made all the arrangements for our stay in the marina.  He met us at the dock as we pulled into Burnt Store Harbor after a six week passage aboard our vessel Sea Bird.  He and Rose were especially accommodating in taking care of us boaters who then were without land transportation.  We enjoyed many visits and meals with Joe and Rose during some 14 or so winter seasons while we lived aboard Sea Bird and later when we lived at Emerald Pointe in Punta Gorda.  Those were pleasurable and fulfilling years and Joe and Rose  were a significant part of that experience.

Joe Giorgio was a respected, innovative and eminent colleague during my 11 plus years a superintendent of Fairfield Public Schools. The mid sixties to the mid seventies were exiting years and Joe contributed significantly to that which made the Fairfield Public Schools the quality schools they were then and are today. The Continuing Education Program Joe developed then and afterwards stands as a beacon for many to this day.

I shall ever be grateful to Joe Giorgio for the vital part he played on our administrative team and then as a friend in retirement.  He will live long in the memories of his many friends and colleagues

I shall miss him and think of him often.

Dr. Joseph Zapytowski, former superintendant of Fairfield Public Schools, wished to post the following tribute to Dr. Edward Bourque.  Many thanks Dr. Zapytowski:

My sincere and profound condolences and prayers are offered to Dr. Edward Bourque’s dear family.  I am greatly saddened by the news of his death.  I shall miss the ability to talk and to communicate with him.  Whenever we connected, he had a special way of showing his pride for his children and their offspring.  Ed was such a very caring father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He was always there for his family.  His family has suffered a grievous loss, as have his friends and I.  We shall miss him.

Dr. Edward Bourque’s decades of work in education, both public and private, serve as a testimonial to the myriad of contributions Ed made to the Fairfield Public Schools and to the greater Fairfield community.  Ed was a dear friend and an esteemed colleague of mine, first as a foreign language consultant and later as an assistant superintendent during my 11+ year tenure as superintendent of the Fairfield Public Schools.

As an administrator, Dr. Bourque was extremely knowledgeable, detailed, precise and yet very much a human being with a great heart.  He was among the earliest of arrivals at the central office each day and invariably among the very last to depart as he worked to help make the Fairfield Public Schools the quality schools they were in those days and continue to be to this day.  He was so proud of our FLES program (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) and rightly so as the program had local and national recognition.  Ed was always most supportive of teachers during all the years I knew him.

I owe a great deal to Dr. Edward Bourque for being such a vitally important member of our administrative team during those days in the 60’s and 70’s. I shall always be grateful for his support and advice.  He will live long in the memories of his friends. I know that I shall think of Ed often.

He is survived by daughters Susan Rink and Michele (Ken) Jentzen, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many dear friends. He received his Bachelor of Education degree from Rhode Island College, Master of Liberal Arts from Middlebury College, and Doctor of Philosophy from Walden University. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and taught in France after service in World War II as a translator during the American occupation of Europe. Dr. Bourque devoted 63 years of his life to education, both as a teacher and an administrator for districts in Rhode Island, New York, and Connecticut. He also served as Assistant Superintendent of the Fairfield Public Schools. He was president of Connecticut Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (CASCD), and was involved in many other educational organizations. After his retirement he continued teaching French and Latin at Notre Dame Catholic High School in Fairfield. Edward will be fondly remembered as a true educator, one who believed the best in all people and expected nothing less of his students and those dear to him. His greatest joy and legacy are his grandchildren and great- grandchildren, as well as his example of courage, resiliency, zest for life, and above all, love for his friends and family.
